Boston Wireless:Sprint declares “Business Freedom” for companies of all sizes with the launch of new wireless plans that are long on value – but lack the long-term contract

Sprint declares “Business Freedom” for companies of all sizes with the launch of new wireless plans that are long on value – but lack the long-term contract
Flexibility for today’s businesses – and today’s business climate
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), July 20, 2011 – Sprint today announced the launch of Business Freedom Plans – new wireless voice and data plans for businesses that come packed with value, pooling options and the best of Sprint’s portfolio of devices, but waive the long-term contract to get it all.
Sprint Business Freedom Plans, available starting July 24, are month-to-month, zero-term plans that deliver the features and flexibility that today’s businesses want. The plans enable businesses to pool minutes without the need for long-term contractual commitments. They can also pool Business Freedom and other Sprint plans on the same billing account. With Business Freedom, businesses can easily adjust their wireless usage as their needs change — consider tax accountants, utilities and manufacturers, whose need for wireless service spikes and drops based on seasonal demand. It also lets them pick and choose from a broad selection of Sprint’s business-grade handsets backed by Sprint’s industry-leading business-grade customer care.
“Business Freedom is a flexible set of rate plans that responds to the ever-changing needs of mobile businesses without forcing them into restrictive long-term contract terms,” said Berge Ayvazian, senior consultant, Heavy Reading. “The ability to pool minutes while maintaining broad device selection and business-grade customer care is a potentially disruptive offering that should get the business market to move.”
“Up to now, many businesses subscribed to consumer prepaid services as a way to avoid long-term contracts,” said Paget Alves, president-Sprint Business. “But to achieve prepaid’s contract terms, a business had to sacrifice a broader device selection and business-grade customer care. Business Freedom gives today’s businesses the best combination of the things they want most from a wireless provider: the right plan with the right terms – with the availability of business-grade devices and service included.
“Long-term contracts often held back businesses from upgrading their wireless capabilities,” Alves added. “Often, we’d see a business holding off on investing in mobile solutions for employees, because in these economic times it’s more difficult to commit to a long-term contract. Business Freedom removes the need to wait until the economy turns, allowing businesses to provide employees with the wireless services they need to grow their businesses today.”
Steve Hilton, principal analyst, Analysys Mason added, “Enterprises large and small increasingly need flexibility to meet current business needs. Wireless has, no doubt, become one of the top technology tools for businesses today – carriers who can provide enterprises with more flexibility with innovative wireless packages that provide contract term flexibility will find their rewards in the market.”

Boston Wireless:Key senator opposes AT&T $39B purchase of T-Mobile

Key senator opposes AT&T $39B purchase of T-Mobile
July 20, 2011 1:46 PM ET
By JOELLE TESSLER
WASHINGTON (AP) – A key member of the Senate Judiciary Committee is calling on federal regulators to block AT&T’s proposed $39 billion purchase of T-Mobile USA.
Herb Kohl, a Wisconsin Democrat, is chairman of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee that handles antitrust matters. He says the transaction would lead to higher prices and fewer choices for consumers by leaving just three national wireless carriers. He notes that two of those carriers — AT&T and Verizon Wireless — would control nearly 80 percent of the market.
He says that by eliminating T-Mobile, the merger would remove the one carrier offering less expensive prices and rate plans.
Thus, he says, the acquisition “would likely cause substantial harm to competition and consumers.”
Kohl sent a letter to the Justice Department and the Federal Communication Commission on Wednesday.

NEUROFIBROMATOSIS, type 2 (NF-2)

A rare inherited disorder characterized by the development of benign tumors on both auditory nerves. (acoustic neuromas). The disease is also characterized by the development of malignant central nervous system tumors as well.

The NF2 gene has been mapped to chromosome 22 and is thought to be a so-called ‘tumor- suppressor gene’. Like other tumor suppressor genes (such as p53 and Rb), the normal function of NF2 is to act as a brake on cell growth and division, ensuring that cells do not divide uncontrollably, as they do in tumors. A mutation in NF2 impairs its function, and accounts for the clinical symptoms observed in neurofibromatosis sufferers. NF-2 is an autosomal dominant genetic trait, meaning it affects both genders equally and that each child of an affected parent has a 50% chance of inheriting the gene.

We are learning more about the function of the NF2 gene through studies of families with neurofibromatosis type 2 and through work in model organisms, particularly mice. The exact molecular function of NF2 in the cell is still unknown, although the protein is similar to the ERM family of cytoskeleton-membrane linker proteins. Further work on the binding partners of NF2 would help to identify potential specific targets for future drug therapies.

Let us help Ed today!

Just  think, what we spend on coffee ,will change Ed’s Life.

Boston Wireless:Report: Amazon to release Android-powered tablet in Q3

July 13, 2011 — 4:05pm ET | By Phil Goldst

Amazon.com will release a tablet product in the coming months running Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android platform, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, a move that would bring Amazon into closer competition with Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and its iPad.

The report, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, said Amazon will release the as-yet-unnamed product before October. The device will sport a 9-inch display but will not have a camera, and will be designed by an Asian manufacturer. However, the report noted that Amazon is designing its own tablet model, which could be released next year. Consumers will be able to use the tablet to access videos, music and digital books they purchase from Amazon, which will allow Amazon to better compete with Apple’s iTunes and iBooks offerings.

Analysts said that the new tablet device could be a way for Amazon to get users to keep on buying digital content. “Mobility combined with online sales capability enables Amazon to be with the consumer at the time they want to purchase,” Gartner analyst Gene Alvarez told Reuters. “Prior to mobile commerce, Amazon had to wait until you got in front of a computer.”

Sign up for our FREE newsletter for more news like this sent to your inbox!

It’s unclear if the device will feature built-in wireless connections. Amazon is closely tied to the wireless industry; the company’s first Kindle ereader launched with built-in support for Sprint Nextel’s (NYSE:S) network. ABI Research recently reported that 25 percent of Apple’s iPads in the first quarter shipped with built-in cellular wireless connections.

An Amazon spokesman cold not immediately be reached for comment, the Journal said.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos strongly hinted in May that his company will release a tablet based on Android. In an interview with Consumer Reports, Bezos said to “stay tuned” on the company’s plans for a multipurpose tablet product. He suggested that such a device would supplement but not replace the popular Kindle.

Although there has been some speculation that Amazon might license webOS from Hewlett-Packard, Amazon has given multiple indications this year that it is backing Android. Amazon formally launched its Amazon Appstore for Android in late March, offering consumers a new channel to download applications optimized for Android smartphones and tablets. Shortly after the Appstore launched, Amazon unveiled a cloud-based music service called Cloud Drive that initially targeted Android devices.

Interestingly, the WSJ report also said Amazon will release two updated versions of its popular Kindle electronic reader in the third quarter. One will have a touchscreen display and the other will not, but will be an improved and cheaper version of the current Kindle.

AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) said on Wednesday it will supply mobile broadband service to a $139 Kindle 3G, which will come with AT&T-sponsored ads and screensavers. The regular Kindle 3G will remain $189.

Boston Wireless:Frost & Sullivan: U.S. Wireless Consumers Rate Sprint the Highest for Customer Value Enhancement

SOURCE: Frost & Sullivan

June 22, 2011 07:52 ET

Extensive Survey Asked Customers to Rate Top Service Providers on Overall Quality, Price and Customer Service

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA–(Marketwire – Jun 22, 2011) – Based on Frost & Sullivan’s recent independent research surveying 1,003 U.S. consumers, Sprint receives the 2011 North American Wireless Consumers’ Choice Award for Customer Value Enhancement for being the cellular telephone service provider that rates highest on customer value enhancement variables, such as overall quality and price.

Frost & Sullivan estimates the U.S. wireless market to have 295.2 million prepaid and postpaid subscribers at the end of 2010; a 4.7 percent year-over-year increase. The more popular mobile wireless services become, the more challenges the market faces, compelling providers to leverage customer value to succeed in the market. With the top-two mobile wireless providers, Verizon and AT&T, controlling over 55 percent of the total market share, competing providers have to work extra hard to gain customers.

“Sprint edges out its major competitors on customer value enhancement, receiving an average rating of 5.33 on a seven-point scale from its customers, compared to the average ratings of 5.05 to 5.29 for its major competitors,” says Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst, Joerg Ditmer. “In particular, Sprint earns this award on the basis of its strong rating on price relative to its top competitors.”

Sprint ranks first in price, receiving 0.37 points more than its top competitor. In today’s market, price is important when choosing a consumer service. More consumers are leaning toward smartphones, which come at a higher price. However, Sprint provides smartphones such as Androids and BlackBerrys for a more reasonable price than its competitors do.

The company ranks second in overall quality compared to its top-four competitors. Sprint’s CDMA network allows it to provide services to all 50 states along with Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Furthermore, Sprint began offering 4G service in 2008 and currently covers 130 million people across the U.S.

“Sprint further adds to its customer value based on the improvements it has been making; notably in its network,” adds Gina Villanueva. “Faster broadband speeds are what customers demand and through its 4G network, Sprint will be able to meet those demands.”

Based on these factors, Frost & Sullivan is proud to present the 2011 North American Consumers’ Choice Award for best cellular telephone service provider for customer value enhancement in the wireless market to Sprint.

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated excellence in implementing strategies that proactively create value for its customers with a focus on improving the return on the investment that customers make in its services or products. The award recognizes the company’s focus on enhancing the value that its customers receive, beyond simply good customer service, leading to improved customer retention and ultimately customer base expansion.

Frost & Sullivan’s Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.

Boston Wireless:Lightyear Joins Hosted VoIP Fray

Lightyear Joins Hosted VoIP Fray

June 24, 2011 By Kelly Teal 0 Comments

Lightyear Network Solutions Inc. has joined a number of its peers by getting into the hosted VoIP business.

The Kentucky-based CLEC announced the launch on Thursday; its hosted VoIP is available through agents, whose compensation will vary depending on factors including the size and opportunity of the sale, as well as any special incentives. Channel support includes webinar training and back-office assistance. Other advantages for partners include automated service activation; easy device configuration; firewall and security server; and, for the sales process, Web-based quote generation.

Lightyear’s BroadSoft-powered product targets SMBs – often with more than one location – that want to save money on voice services. Hosted VoIP achieves that aim because it uses IP, rather than TDM, access and requires little capital investment, relying instead on an operational-expense model. Most of the money spent on gear goes toward customer-premise equipment such as desktop phones, not pricey switches.

Hosted VoIP has grown in popularity as businesses try to cut down on long-distance and in-house IT staff costs. The product also lets users program adds, moves and changes quickly and cheaply through a Web portal, and comes with far more features than traditional phone platforms. For agents, hosted VoIP often ties into other cloud-based services, too, resulting in more revenue overall.

Here are some ways partners can make the most of hosted VoIP sales:

  1. Identify ideal customers.
  2. Use the meeting time to discuss pain points and business needs. Explain how hosted VoIP features can help solve those problems and contribute to employees’ productivity. When possible, have your hosted VoIP provider on hand to conduct a demonstration.
  3. Create a proposal with the help of your carefully selected hosted VoIP provider.
  4. Again meet with the prospect, bringing in your hosted VoIP provider for answers to questions about technology, implementation and so on.
  5. Close the deal and let the hosted VoIP provider get to work on deployment.
  6. Take part in that provisioning as much as you are willing, so you keep learning about the products and services you’re selling.
  7. Continue to take advantage of provider-hosted education and training.
  8. Encourage your customers to take advantage of the provider’s end-user training.

Former Boston Mob Boss Whitey Bulger Arrested

Whitey Bulger Arrested In Santa Monica After 16 Years On Run

POSTED: 6:32 am EDT June 23, 2011

Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger was captured near Los Angeles 16 years after his run from the law sparked an international manhunt and served as a major embarrassment to the FBI as their onetime informant eluded authorities.

Whitey Bulger

FBI

The FBI finally caught the 81-year-old Bulger at a residence in Santa Monica along with his longtime girlfriend Catherine Greig on Wednesday, just days after the government launched a publicity campaign to locate the fugitive mobster, said Steven Martinez, FBI’s assistant director in charge in Los Angeles. The arrest was based on a tip from the campaign, he said. Bulger, who was an inspiration for the 2006 Martin Scorsese film, “The Departed,” is wanted for his alleged role in 19 murders. One victim was shot between the eyes in a parking lot at his country club in Oklahoma. Another was gunned down in broad daylight on a South Boston street to prevent him from talking about the killing in Oklahoma. Others were taken out for running afoul of Bulger’s gambling enterprises.

“He left a trail of bodies,” said Tom Duffy, a retired state police major who was one of the lead investigators in the criminal case against Bulger. “You did not double-cross him. If you did, you were dead.”

Whitey Bulger

FBI

Bulger provided information on a rival gang to the FBI, then fled in January 1995 when a former agent told him he was about to be indicted. The FBI had been conducting surveillance in the area where Bulger was arrested, said police Sgt. Rudy Flores, who gave no details of the arrest. Agents swarmed around Bulger’s building late Wednesday, hours after the arrests in a neighborhood of two and three-story apartment buildings. Bulger lived on the third floor of The Princess Eugenia, a three-story, 28-unit building of one and two-bedroom apartments three blocks from a bluff that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Neighbors said the couple did not stand out. Barbara Gluck, who lives on the same floor as Bulger and Greig, said she didn’t know their names but recognized them from photos on the Internet after she heard about their arrest. Gluck described Greig as “sweet and lovely” and said they would have “girl talk” when they ran into each other in the building. Bulger became angry whenever he saw the two of them talking, and would say, “Stop talking to her,” Gluck said. “He was nasty,” she added. “At one point, (Greig) said (Bulger) has a rage issue.” Bulger and Greig were scheduled to appear in Los Angeles federal court Thursday. He faces a series of federal charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, narcotics distribution, extortion and money laundering, while the 60-year-old Greig is charged with harboring a fugitive.

See Google Street View of where Bulger was arrested.

The arrest brings an end to a manhunt that received worldwide attention as the FBI received reported sightings of Bulger and Greig from all over the United States and parts of Europe. In many of those sightings, investigators could not confirm whether it was Bulger who was spotted or a lookalike. The investigation touched the highest level of Massachusetts politics. Bulger’s younger brother, William, was one of the most powerful politicians in the state, leading the Massachusetts Senate for 17 years and later serving as president of the University of Massachusetts for seven years. He resigned his post in August 2003 amid pressure from then-Gov. Mitt Romney and Attorney General Thomas Reilly. William Bulger told a congressional committee that he spoke to his brother shortly after he went on the run in 1995 but had no idea about his whereabouts. He declined to comment to the Boston Globe about his brother’s arrest. For many years, William Bulger was able to avoid any tarnish from his brother’s alleged crimes. But in August 2003, he resigned his post as president of UMass amid pressure from then-Gov. Mitt Romney and Attorney General Thomas Reilly. Bulger, nicknamed “Whitey” for his shock of bright platinum hair, grew up in a gritty South Boston housing project, and went on to become Boston’s most notorious gangster. Along with Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi, he led the violent Winter Hill Gang, a largely Irish mob that ran loan-sharking, gambling and drug rackets in the Boston area. U.S. Attorney Donald K. Stern said in 2000 that the two were “responsible for a reign of intimidation and murder that spanned 25 years.” Prosecutors said he went on the run after being warned by John Connolly Jr., an FBI agent in Boston who had made Bulger an informant 20 years earlier. Connolly was convicted of racketeering in May 2002 for protecting Bulger and Flemmi, also an FBI informant. Bulger provided the Boston FBI with information on his gang’s main rival, the New England Mob, in an era when bringing down the Mafia was one of the FBI’s top national priorities. But the Boston FBI office was sharply criticized when the extent of Bulger’s alleged crimes and his cozy relationship with the FBI became public in the late 1990s. A congressional committee, in a draft report issued in 2003, blasted the FBI for its use of Bulger and other criminals as informants, calling it “one of the greatest failures in the history of federal law enforcement.” After he fled, Bulger became one of the nation’s most-hunted fugitives. With a place next to Osama bin Laden on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list, he had a $2 million reward on his head. In September 2002, the FBI received the most reliable tip in three years when a British businessman who had met Bulger eight years earlier said he spotted Bulger on a London street. After the sighting, the FBI’s multiagency violent fugitive task force in Boston and inspectors from New Scotland Yard scoured London hotels, Internet cafes and gyms in search of Bulger. The FBI also released an updated sketch, using the businessman’s description of Bulger as tan, white-haired and sporting a gray goatee. On Monday, the FBI announced a new publicity campaign and accompanying public service ad that asked people, particularly women, to be on the lookout for Greig. The 30-second ad started running Tuesday in 14 television markets to which Bulger may have ties and was to air during programs popular with women roughly Greig’s age. The new campaign pointed out that Greig had several plastic surgeries before going on the lam and was known to frequent beauty salons. On Thursday, Bulger’s picture on the Ten Most Wanted list was spanned by a red banner that said “Captured.” Greig’s photo, with the same banner, was displayed prominently. John Weiskopf, who lives across the street from Bulger’s Santa Monica building, said he recognized Bulger when he saw his photo on the Internet. “I recognized him. I said `Holy Smokes,”‘ he said. “From what I understand, these were really gracious easy-going people,” Weiskopf said. “They don’t come out with fangs, they just blended in.”

Boston Lightyear Wireless:Verizon’s ‘DataGate’ plans leaked in excruciating detail

Verizon’s ‘DataGate’ plans leaked in excruciating detail

By Brad Molen posted Jun 22nd 2011 2:45PM

With each and every passing day, the rumors surrounding Verizon’s new “usage plans” are getting tougher to ignore. It’s only been two days since we initially heard Big Red was ready to ride its unlimited data plans into the sunset in favor of switching to a newer, more usage-friendly model, and the leaks continue to flood in. This go-round, very official-looking docs that offer up a whole slew of details are in the open air. Many of the details echo what we’ve heard before: the data plans are the same price, starting at $30 for 2GB and working up to increments of 5GB for $50 and 10GB for $80; mobile hotspot access is an additional $20 and you’ll get hooked up with an extra pair of gigs; finally, going over these allotments will cost you $10 per GB.

As rumored yesterday, all customers grandfathered into the unlimited monthly data will be allowed to keep it, even when upgrading to new phones. Business discounts, currently applied to the limitless plans, would now only apply to primary lines that are willing to fork out $50 or more; however, the wording did not indicate whether or not those grandfathered in would still receive those same benefits. More leaked docs can be found after the break, so grab some lunch and find your favorite chair — you’ll need ‘em.

Verizon Indirect Dealer Memo

As of this morning we have been given the green light to start training on the data changes Verizon Wireless is making effective 7/7/11.

$29.99 unlimited data will be discontinued effective 7/7/11

  • EXISTING CUSTOMERS- That have our $29.99 unlimited data plan WILL BE GRANDFATHERED IN, they will keep their unlimited plan after 7/7/11
  • EXISTING CUSTOMERS- That current have the unlimited data WILL BE ABLE TO UPGRADE AND KEEP the unlimited data feature (No known end date on this as of this moment)
  • EXISTING CUSTOMERS- That add lines post 7/7/2011, will NOT be able to choose the $29.99 unlimited data feature
  • NEW CUSTOMERS- Any customer that sets up service from now, until 7/7/2011 WILL BE ON, AND WILL BE GRANDFATHERED into our $29.99 unlimited data package
  • NEW CUSTOMERS- Any new customer that set up service AFTER 7/7/2011, WILL NOT be able to choose the $29.99 unlimited plan
  • BUSINESS DISCOUNTS- Currently our business discounts apply to the $29.99 data plan on the primary line only. Most discounts are 20% despite whatever monthly access discount they have
  • BUSINESS DISCOUNTS- After 7/7/2011 data discounts will only apply to the $50 and higher data packages on the primary line.
  • Discount break down ex. of customers with a 20% feature discount on their primary line. ($50-20%=$40/month for 5GB and includes the business e-mail feature)
  • – ($20/GB vs. $40/GB+ Business e-mail )

New data pricing for smart phones is as follows:

  • $30 for 2GB with $10/GB overage
  • $50 for 5GB (this also includes business e-mail at no additional charge) with $10/GB overage
  • $80 for 10GB (this also includes business e-mail at no additional charge) with $10/GB overage

So all changes effective July 7th, 2011.

Existing customer KEEP their $29.99 unlimited data plan

If an existing customer upgrades from a feature phone to a smart phone after 7/7/11, they will NOT be able to add on the unlimited data package. They must choose from the new data plans.

Anyone who sets up new service with unlimited data, upgrades from a feature phone to a smart phone with unlimited data, or customer currently on the $29.99 before July, 7, 2011 will be grandfathered in.

These changes also apply to employee plans as well (personal accounts w/work discounts applied)

SO, This is a huge time for us to set our customers up with the right package for them! We only have 14 DAYS remaining for unlimited data, and until the new data pricing takes effect. (14 days to setup new customers w/unlimited data, and customers upgrading from a feature phone to a smart phone)

PLEASE, PLEASE make sure we take advantage of this heads up and get our heavy data users set up on these unlimited plans before they change.
